June Program
Meteorology Madness: June 21-25
Ages 6-11

Weather can change in an instant, affecting us and nature. This week we’ll be using microscopes to see what things we can catch in the wind, building our own rain catching devices, learning how local animals deal with the constantly changing weather, and much more. We’ll investigate and experiment with weather in the beautiful natural environments of Winter Island, Salem State Conservation Land, and Lynn Woods.

August Programs
Fantastic Nature Designs:  August 23 – 27
Ages 6-11

What does the shape of a fish have in common with a sports car, the skin of a shark with a swimsuit, and a tree with your dream house? The answer is these living organisms are influencing the way people are building new and efficient technologies. This week we will become scientists in the field of Biomimetics. Using Winter Island and Salem State Conservation Land as our home bases, we’ll see what secrets we can learn from nature’s plants and animals in order to design, experiment, and build our own brand new prototype inventions for the future.

People Movers:  August 23 – 27
Ages 7-11

Long before the time of the chariot, humans have been inventing ways to move people faster, more efficiently, and even just for fun. Design and build ways to move people, maybe just one, or maybe a million. Use a variety of materials, Lego Robotics, and PicoCricket as you engineer a system for transporting people now, and in the future.

Body Zone:  August 30 – September 3
Ages 6-11

Have you ever wondered how far you can jump compared to a mountain lion, or what similarities your skeleton has to that of a humpback whale, or even how your heartbeats measure up to the beats of a hummingbird? Explore, experiment, and learn about what your astonishing body has in common with some of the amazing animals that live around us. We’ll explore the wildlife at Winter Island and Salem State Conservation Land, and take a train to learn about animals and sea life in Gloucester.

Inventors Galore:  August 30 – September 3
Ages 7-11

Learn about our mechanical and physical world as you design and build inventions or products that might use robotics, electricity, wind, light, sound, or any other mechanical or physics principles to accomplish your inventor’s vision. Use your creativity to market your invention, using photos, video or creative Web 2.0 tools.

Teen Leadership Program
For 12 – 14 year olds

Hours: 8:30 to 5:00
Fee: $100 per week

The Teen Leadership Program (TLC) is for young people who are too old for formal summer programs, too young for a formal job, but interested in spending a week assisting our course teachers in the field or engineering/inventions, mentoring younger children, helping out with the activities for the day, supervising recess or play at the park.  TLCs will be given special assignments by their directing teacher and be responsible for various odd jobs that make the course run smoothly.
Interest in science, animals, or the environment or expertise in LEGO Robotics — a plus.

TLCs should have had previous experience working successfully with younger children, be able to work as a member of a team, and have a basic understanding of how children learn through active exploration.  1-2 applicants will be accepted for each course.

Along with their Registration Form, interested TLC applicants should send a list of their experiences working with young children and a letter that explains their interest in the program.  On your Registration Form rank the courses in order of preference and submit your application by June 2nd. You will then be invited for an interview and further clarification of our expectations.

Accepted applicants will meet with the course teacher before each session begins.  They will work closely with course teachers and be given feedback on their performance.  A final evaluation will be written that may be used as a recommendation for future summer employment with young children.
