June Programs
Secret Life of Marine Mammals, Shark, and Turtles: June 15-19

Ages 6-11

How do you measure up to the length of a blue whale?  What would it be like to have a mouth full of baleen instead of teeth?  How busy would the tooth fairy be if she had to visit a shark every time it lost a tooth?  What would it be like to grow up as a sea turtle?  Answer these questions and more as you learn about the extraordinary and demanding lives of marine mammals, sharks, and turtles as you explore Winter Island and the Salem State Conservation Land.  Take a train trip to Gloucester for further research.

Mysteries of the Earth: June 22 – 26
Ages 6-11

The Earth has all kinds of secrets and is home to millions of different plants and animals. Learn about some of the animals and plants and the different habitats in which they live.  Dig deep to uncover some of the secrets left in geological time as you explore Winter Island and the Salem State Conservation Land.

August Programs
The Amazing Outdoors:  August 24 – 28
Ages 6-11

Be a park ranger, a fisherman, an engineer, or a marine biologist for a day.  Step into their shoes for a day as you explore Winter Island, the Salem State Conservation Land, the Lynn Woods, and the Gloucester waterfront.  Develop and perform experiments that will help you see what makes these outdoors jobs are so amazing.

Amusement Park Extraordinaire:  August 24 – 28
Ages 7-11

Six Flags has decided to develop a brand-new amusement park.  They have hired The Phoenix Design Team to design and build a variety of rides for their consideration.  Join the team and use your imagination and skills to invent new and exciting rides – a roller coaster, a water slide, what else can you think of?  The sky’s the limit as we use engineering materials to bring our imaginations to life.

A Fish Tale:  August 31 – September 4
Ages 6-11

Become one with the fish.   Learn about different fish habits, how your local fish are being caught, what it’s like to be a fisherman, and look inside a fish as we do a dissection.  Invent your own fish aggregation device to see if you can attract the fish to us!  Days will include visits to Winter Island, the Salem State Conservation Land, and a trip to Gloucester by train.

Harness the Wind:  August 31 – September 4
Ages 7-11

Who has seen the wind?  Neither you nor I, but it is our future.  Design and build machines that will use the wind to make the Earth a better place to live.  Figure out how to make the wind change direction, turn a windmill, help a boat sail across the water, carry bubbles up into the sky and more as we use engineering materials to bring our imaginations to life

Teen Leadership Program
For 12 – 14 year olds

Hours: 8:30 to 5:00
Fee: $100 per week

The Teen Leadership Program (TLC) is for young people who are too old for formal summer programs, too young for a formal job, but interested in spending a week assisting our course teachers  in the field or engineering/inventions,  mentoring younger children, helping out with the activities for the day, supervising recess or play at the park.  TLCs will be given special assignments by their directing teacher and be responsible for various odd jobs that make the course run smoothly.
Interest in science, animals, or the environment or expertise in LEGO Robotics — a plus.

TLCs should have had previous experience working successfully with younger children, be able to work as a member of a team, and have a basic understanding of how children learn through active exploration.  1-2 applicants will be accepted for each course.

Along with their Registration Form, interested TLC applicants should send a list of their experiences working with young children and a letter that explains their interest in the program.  On your Registration Form rank the courses in order of preference and submit your application by June 2nd. You will then be invited for an interview and further clarification of our expectations.

Accepted applicants will meet with the course teacher before each session begins.  They will work closely with course teachers and be given feedback on their performance.  A final evaluation will be written that may be used as a recommendation for future summer employment with young children.
